Senior High Ministry Opportunities
We offer many opportunities for Senior High youth to gather, learn, teach and grow in their faith. Each year we gather at least four times for various ministry options. Each centers on Bible Study, worship and fellowship. The individual events differ in the youth they target.
LYO Assembly - actually open to 6-12th graders but only senior high are eligible to serve on the LYO Board or serve as small group leaders. This event is centered around total/small group times and happens in February. Each congregation may send 2 delegates plus visitors/adults up to capacity.
LYO Cluster Events - for Western, Eastern, North Central and South Central areas of our synod. All clusters have a fall rally. Some offer Spring events also. Cluster events are open to all youth groups, not just those within the cluster.
Leadership Pathways - leadership training divided into Paths. Path I is for first year participants who learn of their spiritual gifts and their call to ministry - lay or rostered. Path II continues on that theme and builds leadership skills in Bible study and learning how to write devotions and center events on a theme. Path III, doesn't occur every year but is intensely devoted to learning more about Bible Study and the disciples. There is also a stewardship component in this Path.
Bishop's School - Bishop’s School was introduced in Region 9 in 1991 and first implemented in June 1992. Since that date, hundreds of high school youth have participated in this life-changing event. Bishop’s School takes place on the campus of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina. Youth are
housed in the Seminary dorm, worship in Christ Chapel, and study with seminary faculty. The event is designed for in-depth study and discussion of basic theological tenets of the Christian faith. Participants are in class several hours a day, spend time in daily reflection and study, and participate in small groups for reflection.
Service projects in and around the community of Columbia will offer numerous opportunities to assist
youth in their faith journeys. Faith interviews, a variety of worship opportunities, and local service
projects will provide a rich experience away from the campus. Free time is scheduled to help balance
learning with reflection and relaxation. The deadline for 2012 has been extended to April 1st. Click here for an application. Dates for 2012 are June 17-23.
Our fourth gathering option depends on the year. In 2011, we traveled to Upper Darby, PA for a synodical mission trip. In 2012, we have our ELCA Youth Gathering which will happen in New Orleans..
